Get the lead out water-

In light of recent news, Lead has become a major water quality concern. Most of the Bay Area has complied with the EPA Guidelines.

However, as of 2015, Community water systems that exceeded action level levels included Marin County, Mendocino County, and Sonoma County. This information was reported by the Washington Post article More than 5,300 U.S. water systems violated lead-testing rules last year.  Click the link to see the map and read the article.

If you live in the San Joaquin or Calaveras County we suggest testing your water for Lead (See link above). There is a City Water Filter facility located in the Central Valley that allows us to serve your area.

Water Testing is the only way to know for sure

Most Water Authorities will Test Your Water for FREE or a water sample can be taken to an independent lab for testing.

Also:

If your water authority does not post the test results for lead (Annual Water Quality Report), then you should call and ask them.

Ask your water authority:

  1. How many parts per billion of lead are found in the tested water? (More than 15 ppb-seek a solution)
  2. Does the service pipe (header pipe) at the street have lead in it?
  • If so that doesn’t mean the plumbing in your house is exempt. If tested water shows lead, it may also be coming from sources inside your home. It is also important to discover the condition of your home’s plumbing including faucets. Until 2014, the legal limit for “lead-free” pipes was up to 8% lead.

Exposure:

Lead leaches into the water when plumbing materials which contain lead (faucets, pipes, fittings, solder) corrode. Corrosion happens most often when water with a high acid or low mineral content sits inside pipes for several hours.

Don’t worry about your bath water. Lead does not absorb through skin. Drinking water is a concern that needs to be addressed immediately.

Lead Poisoning

If anyone in your home has Symptoms of Lead ExposureSEE YOUR DOCTOR.

The doctor can test your blood lead levels and offer treatment plans if needed.  Children and Pregnant Women (aka Developing Fetus) are most vulnerable to lead exposure.  Experts recommend that parents get their child’s lead level tested at age one and two years old. The EPA calls lead poisoning the “number one environmental health threat in the U.S. for children ages 6 and younger.
